How and what to buy for your Air Scout Uniform ?

Dear Air Scouts,

I understand many of you will be going to buy your uniform.  Here are some tips from my own experience gathered from a little Scout to now  for some 50+++ years.

1. Please logon http://www.scout.org.hk/chi/scouthk/uniform/00000569.html and you can find all the Air Scout uniform items.  Print it out and bring to the Scout Shop so that you will not miss any item.

TELL THE SHOPKEEPERS AT THE SCOUT SHOP VERY CLEARLY THAT YOU WISH TO BUY  A WHOLE SET  OF AIR SCOUT UNIFORM and they will help you to get what is necessary.

If you are joining as a teenage Air Scout (age below 18), tell the shopkeeper you want to buy a complete set of AIR SCOUT UNIFORM from head to feet , that is from  beret to shoes respectively.

If you are joining as an adult Air Scout Leader (age 18 and above), tell the shopkeeper that you want to buy a whole set of Air Scout Leader's Uniform from head to feet , that is  from beret to shoes respectively.

1a. also buy a "Scout Record Book", a compass and 2 Scout Ropes ( there are 2 kinds of ropes, buy the thin and shorter rope) that you will need in Scout Meetings.

2. For Teenage Air Scouts in our Air Scout Group boys will wear shorts and girls will wear skirts-shorts  In Summer. BOTH boys and girls will wear long trousers to keep out the cold. Adult Air Scout Leaders wear trousers.   Air Scout Leaders will buy a dark blue tie for worn at times in lieu of the scarf.

2.a. It is not necessary to buy the Group Scarf as it is issued at your own Air Scout Group.

3. If you are a teenager, you are growing fast it might be wise to buy beret, shirts and shorts of a larger size so that you can still wear them in  a year or so without having to spend extra money to buy new ones after a few months.

4. Shoes - It is recommended to buy the shoes at the Scout Shop because they are good for foot drill, easy to shine and are of good quality and you can wear them to school as well.   Mind you, not all shoes are suitable for foot drill and shining.  Some shoes will give you problem and hurdles on foot drill and marching.  Some shoes never shine and you will be very unhappy to see your shoes are not as shiny as your fellow Scouts and your Leaders keep telling you to shine your shoes during uniform inspections.

5. You need to buy the following badges

beret badge (beret badge is the same for all teenage scouts. leaders should specify their rank e.g. ASL beret badge has red plume), Hong Kong badge, Scout membership badge, Kowloon Region badge, Kowloon City badge

5a. Sew the badges as in the diagram of "Scout Record Book"  or go to see the life-size model display of uniform at the Scout Shop on Austin Road, Kowloon and you will know how. Or take a photo of the model to bring home to show your tailor or mother on how to sew the badges.

5b. Sew all other badges except the Scout Membership Badge.  Repeat: do NOT sew the Scout Membership badge onto your shirt or you will be asked to remove it.  You are not eligible to wear the Scout Membership Badge nor the Group Scarf until you have passed all the tests for the membership badge in the "Scout Record Book".

6. The Group Scarf and the Scout Membership Badge will be "presented" to you by the GSL during an Investiture Ceremony after  you have passed all the membership tests.   The Group Scarf is NOT on sale at the Scout Shop.  It is only available at your Scout Group and there is one  reserved for you. So no need to buy nor worry about the Scarf for the time being.

7. You can also buy the Air Scout woollen jumper to save another trip in winter. I found that  It is very good and wear it to fly every winter.  But you should consider buying a larger size if you are a teenager because you are growing taller, bigger and stronger every minute.  Roll up the sleeve if too long.  We do not mind.......remember the Scout Law: A Scout is thrifty and makes good use of time and is careful of possessions and property.

If you have any difficulty in buying or getting your Air Scout uniform PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO GIVE ME A RING or an email.   Also phone me if you have difficulty at the Scout Shop. I shall be happy to speak to the shopkeeper of the Scout Shop over the phone to help you.

The Scout Shop has 2 outlets to serve you. One at Austin Road, Kowloon and one at  Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai. Logon http://www.scout.org.hk/chi/scouthk/uniform/00000569.html and you can find the addresses and the opening hours.  Always phone first to check if it is open or in case there might be a temporary closure due to stock taking etc.

Happy shopping !
